As boy he took time out from fighting in the streets and swimming in the Mississippi to sing for pennies and to form part of a strolling quartet in which he played cigar-box guitar. ...

I am not in a position to argue as I do not have any references, but I always understood (read?) that Armstrong used an "Orange box" guitar.
The whole business was involved in economics, real guitars were presumably expensive and any available alternative to the real guitar body was pressed into action; thus Orange boxes and cigar boxes.
